What do you need to publish?

Files someone needs to open

A proposal and its spreadsheet can share one Flat link. Without a root index.html, Flat gives visitors a file browser. They can read supported files and download the originals without you building a page to link them together.

For a website, publish the finished HTML and assets instead. Use version links for specific copies, or point a named address to each new upload.

A website you manage in the browser

Static.app is worth keeping if you use its code editor, built-in form collection, or client workspaces. Its Mac app can publish changes as you save files locally.

Flat hosts the files you publish. It has no built-in form inbox or browser code editor. If those are part of your site, account for them before moving.

Flat
Upload finished files in your browser or publish a folder with the CLI. A root index.html opens as your website.

Keep an earlier copy

Flat
Each upload gets a separate version link. Send revised files at a new link while the earlier upload stays available at its own address.

A free plan or a seven-day trial

Flat plans

Free includes 5 MiB per upload, 1 GiB of storage, and 5 GiB of monthly transfer. Signed-in uploads have no set expiry. Named onflat.page addresses and visitor passwords are included.

Starter is €9 a month for 100 MiB per upload, 50 GiB of storage, 100 GiB of monthly transfer, and 1 custom domain.

All Flat plans and allowances

Static.app plans

The free trial lasts seven days, with one website and 50 MB of storage. It includes a subdomain, SSL, the Mac app, and API/MCP access.

  • Starter is US$6 a month for two websites and 500 MB of storage, or US$60 billed annually.
  • Medium is US$12 a month for seven websites and 3 GB of storage, or US$120 billed annually.
  • Large is US$18 a month for thirty websites and 10 GB of storage, or US$180 billed annually.

Paid plans list unlimited traffic, custom domains, forms, analytics, and workspaces. Large includes three website backup slots; backup add-ons start at US$5 a month for one website.

Static.app pricing and allowances

Flat's upload allowance covers all files in one upload and uses MiB and GiB. Static.app lists MB and GB, with a 50 MB per-file trial limit and a 1 GB per-file paid limit, subject to available storage. Its MCP ZIP publishing limit is 100 MB.

Move a copy of your website first

Download and publish your files

Start with your local site files, or download a ZIP through Static.app's site export API or MCP tool. Extract the archive into a folder such as ./site, with index.html at its root.

With Node.js 20 or newer, publish that folder:

npx -y @getflat/cli deploy ./site

Open the returned link and check your pages, images, and downloads. Run npx -y @getflat/cli login before expiry to keep a signed-out upload.

Check what your site depends on

HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and assets can move together. Static.app's form handling, analytics history, workspaces, and backup settings do not move with the files.

Replace any Static.app form integration and check external services before switching your domain. You can connect your own domain to Flat once the new copy works.

Before you switch

Can I keep my Static.app link?

An address supplied by Static.app stays with Static.app. You can move a domain you own to Flat after checking the new upload. Links to individual pages also need the same file paths to keep working.

Can I upload a website ZIP to Flat?

Extract it first, then publish the folder with the CLI. Flat serves uploaded ZIP files as files to download; it does not unpack them into a website.

Does Flat replace Static.app backups?

Flat gives each upload its own version link, so publishing new files leaves previous uploads unchanged. Those links stay available while their uploads are retained and accessible. Static.app's backups also provide scheduled snapshots, downloadable archives, and restore controls.

Will my PDF open in the browser?

Yes. Both services provide browser PDF viewing. Flat also lets visitors browse several uploaded files together. Its generated file viewers keep Flat branding and cannot be embedded in an iframe; original files remain available to download.
